I have only two words to describe the Richmond Folk Festival. AWE. SOME. I went to the National Folk Festival for multiple days the last two years that it was in Richmond, and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I had a great time when I went with "just" grownups, and I had a great time when I went with grownups + kids.
Now, I must confess, I am not someone who usually chooses to go to concerts, and anyone that knows me knows I have NO IDEA about current "hip" music, unless it is on Q94 or K95, or part of the NPR programming. My 10-year-old already does the eye roll because I don't have any clue who the White Ties are. However, I am completely pro-festivals, particularly anything out-of-doors, and particularly anything that is family friendly PLUS offers adult beverages. The Richmond Folk Festival did just that. Great stuff for the kids, great stuff for the grownups, and a really unusual line-up of musicians and performers from all areas and all cultures. A Richmond Times-Dispatch article on today's front page highlighted the diversity of the Folk festival line-up, as well as the diversity of the attendees. It was great to see people from 8 months to 88, black, white, brown, and everything in between, all enjoying gorgeous weather, outstanding food, arts and crafts, wonderful music, and camaraderie. THAT is the Richmond, Virginia that I love so much. I'm already looking forward to the 2009 Folk Festival. Rock on, Richmond.
